Eating with the season.

Each season carries its own unique energy, richness, and expansion. Mother nature gifted us the opportunity to move with the ever-changing cycles. Seasonal changes are not only connected to the weather shifting, health and wellness also play a vital role during these times. As our bodies begin to naturally prepare for the season and need support through this process. Eating with the season can be helpful to our overall well-being. I’ve put together the top benefits of why eating seasonally can be beneficial to your health.

High Nutrient Content & Flavor

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs defines seasonal produce as “food that is outdoor-grown or produced during the natural/growing production period.” When foods are grown in their natural environment and season, this increases the nutritional value. Having extra nutrients also adds vibrancy, freshness, and a sweeter taste when producing in its right season.

Less Expensive

Seasonal produce is typically less expensive due to, more supply availability. Off-season produce has a slightly higher cost being imported from all over the world. Buying in season can help reduce travel time and be cost-effective. Food is fresh, available, and maybe less expensive.

Tip: If you're unable to find fresh seasonal produce, consider buying the frozen option. Frozen seasonal fruits and veggies are also picked at their nutrient peak and are more affordable!

Promotes Community & Longevity

Summer and spring is a great time to visit your local farmers’ market, not only will you learn more about the fruits and vegetables, but it also creates community. Studies according to the Blue Zone show more dense populations of centenarians have support from loved ones and people in their community which, contributes to longevity.

Consider checking out a farmers’ market if you have one in your area. You might find certain fruits and veggies that you normally won’t see at the local grocery store. Farmer’s markets may have a variety of foods to try, give you the opportunity to connect with people in your neighborhood, help spark ideas and encourage you to eat more fruits and veggies.

Things to consider when eating seasonally

Keep in mind, depending on where you live, each state will vary in producing seasonal fruits and vegetables. There are also certain fruits and veggies that are in season all year round. Consider checking out this food guide and find out what produce is at its peak and in season near you!

Fruits and vegetables are great in supporting your well-being. However, all vegetables and fruits are not a “one size fits all” approach. Do you have any allergies or sensitivities? Trust what feels right and what vegetables and fruits work best for you regardless of the season.

Here’s to good health!
